I haven’t watched the full episode yet—I’m about to—but I’m wondering, watching this, whether the modern pilgrim’s experience and attitudes are different from those in the Middle Ages.
I suspect the religious pilgrims then understood and accommodated the need for quiet better than us modern folk. Of course, there’s no way of knowing. But the thing driving you forward on the trail is probably not a pressing need to see Santiago. You’d drive if that’s all it was! It’s something much deeper, and taking the time acknowledge that is probably more countercultural than it was 500 years ago.
